My elder sister, JOANA, showed early on -- as a child in Cincinnati, Ohio -- glowing prospects for an artistic career, either in music or dance. Reared later in Arkansas, she attended the Dorothy Donelson School of Dance in Little Rock during World War II years and excelled as a rising ballerina, even as she took piano lessons that familiarized her with most of the classical composers. Her mother, manager of Bluebird Courts in Rose City, was proud of her daughter's ballet performances on the stage at the city's Joseph Taylor Robinson Auditorium. Joana, a Little Rock (Central) High student, left home while still a teenager to live and work with an admiring music teacher. Eventually, she took secretarial courses at Draughon's School of Business in Little Rock, Ark. A lifelong Methodist, she found her new office skills earned a secretarial position with the Ark-La Conference of the Methodist Church with offices on Broadway. After years, she excelled in that position and was selected as a Spanish-speaking Methodist missionary in Santiago and the Chile of Salvador Allende. Following years there, she returned in the 1960s to Arkansas and her childhood home at 410 N. Spruce Street where she got better acquainted with her younger brother, Jerry. They reveled in watching late-night classic monster movies together on TV's Shock Theatre. She brought there with her carpeting and other furnishings that included a grand piano and the first TV the Dean family ever had owned. She remained a positive influence on education of her kid brother whom she taught Spanish, exposed to grand opera and provided education in sciences and other useful skills. In the early 1970s, she wed Rev. William Scroggin, a Morrilton minister with whom she made a happy home, first at Higdon, Ark. on Greer's Ferry Lake. She continued to correspond with her brother while he finished Hendrix College in Conway and then took on foreign military assignments as an Air Force captain trained in air-traffic control of jet fighters and other high-performance aircraft. Joana later was proud to become a doting aunt of Jerr's sons, David and Daniel, born in 1972 and 1975 respectively. On relocation and retirement with Bill to Conway County, that siblings' relationship continued. Joana also remained a lifelong fan of classical music, and that included her loyal support of KLRE-KUAR public radio stations, then managed at UALR in the 1990s by Jerry's young second wife, Regina Newby Dean. Sadly, Joana was widowed in the 1980s and later died in a Morrilton hospital on May 9, 1998, after a brief visit from Jerry and Regina. She was 65 years old and is buried in Elmwood Cemetery there.
