  • Personal Life & Family

By the time I knew him, I was a little girl, and he was my step-grandfather, having married my father's mother as a second husband. Consequently, all I recall his doing was sitting in a chair as a retired elderly man. I do recall his calling my grandmother saying, "Whoa, Pearl" and requesting things of her. She even cut his whiskers daily with a straight razor, usually on their front, screened-in porch, after she was up in age and was quite shaky with a tremor caused by thyroid disease. It's a wonder she did not cut his throat with that straight razor. It always made me too nervous to watch!
