BIO: JOHN ODUS PITZER: Sixth child and second son of Bessie Ann (Hill) Pitzer and James Paul Pitzer was born June 6, 1929, in Modesto, California. After his father's disappearance he lived one year with his mother on his Grandparents farm and one year with his Grandmother Pitzer in Oklahoma. He then moved back with his brothers and sisters and mother into a rental home at 1000 East First, Hutchinson, Kansas. This would have been about 1940. During the World War II years he lived part of the time with his Uncle Ralph (Sam) and Aunt Katie Hill on the same farm his Grandfather and Grandmother Hill had lived on. While living with them he attended the one-room Fairview Grade School. He then worked for other farmers, one I believe was a Mr. Rush Greene, where he attended Nickerson, Kansas, High School, but never finished. While attending Nickerson High School he met Margery Secrest. On June 6, (John's birthday), 1948, he married Margery Ann Secrest. The wedding was held on the lawn at the home of Margery's parents south of Sterling, Kansas. John work for several farmers in the Rice and Reno County areas in Kansas. A couple I remember was a Mr. Doug Wright, around Sterling, Kansas, and a Mr. Johnson who had a farm near the Arkansas river southeast of Hutchinson, Kansas. Mr. Johnson was the John Deere Implement Dealer, in Hutchinson, Kansas at that time. When Margery and John were first married they live on west third in Hutchinson, Kansas, about the 1400 block, I think. John worked for a company that built silo's for farmers, I don't remember the company's name. He later worked at the Morton Salt Co. and Moonlighted at various other jobs. John worked part time building houses for Kightlinger lumber Company and later went into business for himself doing installation work for Sears Roebuck and Co. John always had time to help others who need him for some odd job. He was probably the hardest working of the Pitzer boys. John and Margery Ann were the parents of three children - two boys and one girl. While the youngest was still in High School, margery divorced John. Later John was remarried to Judith Ann (Chesterman) Baliszewski. She had three daughters by a former marriage. Following a long battle with bone cancer, John passed away on January 14, 1979. He is buried in Memorial Park Cemetery, (same as his mother and several Aunts and Uncles), west of Hutchinson, Kansas. One of my first memories was of Johnny and my other brothers Jimmie and Clarence going to Winans Grade School in Hutchinson, Kansas. I was starting to Kindergarten, year must have been, 1942. John being the oldest was delegated to take charge of enrolling me into Kindergarten class. I was probably the only one there enrolled by his big brother rather than his mother. He did a wonderful job and I will always be grateful to him.

Old Group Photo - 1936-37
Attached is an old photo I received from cousin Richard Kerr. Looking for any help in identifying those in the picture. I have numbered and listed those that we are sure of on the bottom of the picture.

Not sure where or when picture was taken, or what the occasion for the gathering was, but would like to know?

By the ages of the cousins listed, it is estimated that the picture was taken about 1936-37.

Anyone with any information regarding this picture please contact we at [contact link], thanks so much.

The old group photo you have...I'm pretty sure that's my great grandma and grandpa Brown...my grandma, Annie Mae Brown, her sister Aunt Dovie, my crazy hair Aunt Panzy Bell, my mom holding a little boy Edna Ruth and the man is my step grandpa Elgin Squire Stone. My blood grandpa left my grandma in the depression. Grandpa Brown had already passed when I was born in 57. And my great grandma died when I was very young. They always lived in burnsflat or Hobart...Washita co. Farmers. Will try to send the photo that copied I marked them with dots...

Pitzer's Home about 1944
This old house was were I was raised. After my father disappeared in 1939, my mother and 9 children relied on welfare, and rented this old house till my sister purchased it in about 1945. All the family had moved out by the 1960's and it was later demolished. I have a lot of memories of this house and the neighborhood. Phillip H. Pitzer
