John S Albaneze of Kings County, New York United States was born in 1921 to John Albaneze and Jele (Helen) Fabianic. He had siblings Catherine Albaneze, Jerome "Jerry" Albaneze, Minnie Kraljic, Rose Neylan, Anna Rouillard, and Marie Smith. John Albaneze died at age 22 years old on May 13, 1944 at Corsica in France, and was buried in 1946 at St. John’s Cemetery in Middle Village Queens, Queens County.

    White, Citizen, John was the 5th child and 2nd son of Jele (Helen) and John Albaneze who were born in Omislij, on the island of Krk in modern day Croatia in 1888. At the time, Croatia was part of the Austria-Hungary empire. John immigrated to the United States in the early 1900’s and Helen immigrated with their young daughter Catherine in 1913 on board the Carpathia which was the rescue ship for the Titanic in 1912. They settled in Steelton Pennsylvania where grandpa originally worked in the coal mines and then for the Pennsylvania RR. The family moved to Brooklyn NY where John was born in 1921. John enlisted in the Army in 1942 and was in the European theater for the duration of the war serving as a mechanic attached to an air wing. On May 12, 1944 the airfield was attacked in a brutal raid that lasted several hours. John was hit with shrapnel and died the following day from his wounds. His body was returned to the United States in 1946 and he was interred in the family plot at St. John’s Cemetery in Middle Village Queens.

Uncle John’s obituary. He was killed in action in Corsica on May 13, 1944. He was originally buried in Corsica and when the war ended the US government gave grandma the option to leave him where he was buried or bring him home to Brooklyn. He was returned in 1946 and St. John’s Cemetery is his final resting place in the Albaneze family grave.
