Joshua Palmer c. 1750 - c. 1835

Joshua Palmer was born on March 12, 1750 in Amelia County, Virginia. He married Rhoda "Rhody" Palmer-Han[d]cock-Porter-Palmer. He was the parent of William _ Palmer, Ann _ Palmer, Parmenus "Purr" Palmer, Letitia _ Palmer, Richard _ Palmer, Ferdinand "Vardy" Palmer, Thomas _ Palmer, Joshua _ Palmer, Jr., and Martha _ Palmer. Joshua Palmer died at age 85 years old on December 5, 1835 in Union County, South Carolina, and was buried at Skull Shoals Baptist Church Cemetery in Gaffney, Cherokee County.

  • Introduction

    Is often confused with the Rev. Joshua Palmer who emigrated from England and settled in South Carolina, only about 40 miles from Union County, where the Captain lived. Both men had sons named William and Joshua. The Reverend and his family relocated to Union County, Indiana, which added to the confusion (as not all of the references included the "Indiana" part.)

    Entered Service in Oct 1775 as Volunteer (Snow Camp), 4 mo. Drafted in May 1776 (fought Indians from Prince's Fort to Seneca Fort); discharged Oct 1776. Commissioned Mar 1778, as Capt. in Militia (marched to Augusta and then to Florida), 4 mo. Returned Mar 1779, (marched to Augusta, to Bacon's Ridge, to Quaqua Swamp, and finally to Stono Ferry); discharged. Returned Feb 1780, (near Augusta at Cubbert [Cupboard?] Creek), 3 mo. Resigned commission July 1780. Returned as Adjutant to Col. for Battle of Cowpens in Jan 1781. Continued irregularly until cessation of hostilities as a scout.
