My fondest memories of childhood are spending time with my aunt Katie, aunt Charlotte, uncle Eddie, grandma miller, and my uncle Robert, at the old house located at 675 north broad st. San Luis obispo. Aunt Katie loved children she took everyone to Disney land at one time or another, by greyhound bus. She never had a bad thing to say about anybody. I loved spending the night at her house. She would tell me stories about her and how when she was a little girl there were no cars or airplanes or phones. She didn't have crayons so they would color with flower petals. She would play games with me for hours at a time. I always cried when mom came to pick me up. I never wanted to leave.
Even people not related to her, called her aunt Katie. Alex Madonna being one of them. Every year for her birthday she would go to Madonna inn and have a birthday dinner. It was always free. He never charged her.
Aunt Katie died when I was 16 years old at the age of 90. Our family has never been the same. That old house on broad st was where everybody gathered. It didn't matter what time of day it was, you were always welcome. Nobody knocked on the door, you just walked in and sat at the big kitchen table. There was always someone there. There were countless BBQ's, parties, and weddings there. It was the center, the heart, of our family. Nothing was ever the same once the old folks in that house were gone. That house and the people who lived in it were the glue that kept us close.
