Nester Anthony Mitskavich was born to Stanley Mitscavitch (born 1890) and Agatha Petrosky (1900 - 1965). His father was born in Pennsylvania and his mother was born in Lithuania. He had one brother, Joseph Nicodemus Mitskavich. Nester Mitskavich married Lillian A. Rokoski (1928 - 2011) in 1953 and they had five children: Stanley, Susan, Michael, Thomas, and Mary. A veteran of the United States Navy, Nester served during World War II.

Nester played professional baseball. He was a pitcher for the Oil City Refiners and was released from the refiners in 1950. Later in life, he was the bowling manager at the DuBois Lanes.
