Nina Renfrow's History: 1917 - 1985

  • Introduction

In 1944-45 my Holt family lived just across the street (on east 2nd street in Dewey) and down one house from Nina & Curtis's corner house. Perhaps because I was about the same age as their daughter Kay, our families became and remained close friends for the next 30 years - even though we moved from Dewey in 1945-46. We had countless dinners together. I recall their corner house quite well: two bedrooms and a bath upstairs separated by a narrow central stairway, and three rooms downstairs, living room to the left, dining room and kitchen on the right. Small by today's standards - but SO MUCH good food, conversation, games, jokes, local politics, etc. These Renfrows were always good-spirited. They are missed, but remembered, today. Strangely, I find I have no pictures of their whole family - although I have one of Nina & Curtis at our own dinner table about 1950. We knew them mainly in the pre-digital camera, pre-Polaroid era when film was scarce for a while. Their daughter (and my personal friend) Kay, born about 1941, went off to college, met and married, and lived and then died (perhaps in childbirth or because of a disease) in Oregon or Washington state - probably in 1970-85. She is buried in the White Rose Cemetery in Bartlesville, Oklahoma not far from the mausoleum - and near the western fence of the cemetery. Curtis showed me Kay's gravesite decades ago. Nina might also be buried there. One last but important item. Nina Curtis was her married name. I believe Nina Curtis was born as Nina D. Calfee, on 12 Jan 1918 - somewhere. She probably married "Curtis" and became a Renfrow about 1940, as Kay was born late that year or in 1941. But I don't know where they married but would guess in Oklahoma.
