Norfleet Ferdinand Hammond was born on September 7, 1805, in Lumberton, North Carolina, his father, John, was 58. He married Dorcas Israel and they had eight children together. He then married Martha Williams and they had one child together in 1856. He died on November 24, 1881, in Sumter, Georgia, having lived a long life of 76 years, and was buried there.
