Personal Life & Family

A life-long bachelor and St. Louis City resident, Patrick spent the first nineteen years of his life living in a neighborhood known as Old North St. Louis. He wrote about his life in that part of the city and that area's history in two self-published books called GROWING UP IN OLD NORTH ST. LOUIS (2012) and GROWING UP IN OLD NORTH ST. LOUIS: UPDATED AND EXPANDED Second Edition (2018). He also wrote two books about the various city neighborhoods he lived in as an adult called CITY DWELLER: A LIFETIME LIVING AND WORKING IN ST. LOUIS (2013) and CITY DWELLER: A LIFETIME LIVING AND WORKING IN ST. LOUIS: UPDATED AND EXPANDED Second Edition (2021). By the end (in 1972) of his high school education in a Roman Catholic "minor" seminary, he no longer had an interest in becoming a Catholic priest, although he remained a devoted Catholic the rest of his life (in 1962 at his confirmation, he had chosen the name "Joseph" in honor of both his grandfather Joseph Schauer and Saint Joseph). Like his father John, he supported the Catholic Church locally and internationally (in the case of the latter, he was especially generous to the Mary, Mother of God Mission Society's religious and social work in eastern Russia and to the missionary endeavors sponsored by the Seraphic Mass Association). He also supported secular charities such as the Alzheimer's Foundation of America, Heifer International, and the World Wildlife Fund. He worked in the private sector for a few years before entering employment with the City of St. Louis. After several years with a couple of different city agencies, he entered the Federal civil service, starting with the U. S. Office of Personnel Management (formerly known as the U. S. Civil Service Commission) and then continuing his career with the U. S. Department of Veterans Affairs (formerly known as the Veterans Administration), from which he retired in 2009.
