Grandma Anna Ricci - despite coming to the country with nothing- she managed to acquire a house in NYC- a whole house- grew her own fruits and vegetables in the back yard - had chickens- and a lot of really nice jewelry- I look at the cross of hers that she loved that is the only piece I still have- I wish I could talk to her- I barely knew her - she died when I was very young- many times my Mom reflected on how she finally understood all she had gone through in life- funny- it seems to always happen too late -

If only my Mom had actually liked herself- and come from a family that valued women. Instead, unable to admit her vulnerability -she married the wrong man for her- my Dad- and never fully realized her own potential - but did a lot anyway- despite a world that didn't care one bit about her- the way it treats most beautiful women without a good family to protect them and a real sense of self esteem-
