After serving in World War I, John graduated from Tate Hall Law School at Missouri University, and then practiced law with his father. He married Louise Augusta Aurich born 27 Nov 1896 in Woodland, Iroquois Co, Illinois, on 9 Oct 1920 in Kansas City, Missouri and they had one child.
