Funeral services in charge of Rev. C. E. Haynes assisted by Rev. Harold Clark, were held Sunday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. in the Little Prairie church for Mrs. Rosa Swartwoudt, a life-long resident of Forest and Bridgewater townships. Mrs. Swartwoudt passed away early Friday morning, Nov. 8, 1946, following a six month's illness at the home of her son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Allen Swartwoudt in this community. Rosa Thielbar was born May 16, 1863, in the Circle Lake community where she attended rural school. She often recalled the fact that her father, A. F. Thielbar, joined the Union Army and entered the Civil War. He returned and claimed the distinction of having "kept store" for 50 years in the village of Dundas where his daughter continued her schooling and where she was organist of the Methodist Church for several years. In that church she was married to Cassius Swartwoudt on Nov. 22, 1882. After brief residence in nearby communities Mr. and Mrs. Swartwoudt purchased the farm in Forest township where the family resided for 48 years. To this union six children were born: Herbert, Cassius, Ethel (Mrs. Ethel Jorve), Allen, Errol and Rose (Mrs. Clifford Jones), Mr. Swartwoudt passed away several years ago as did a son Herbert and two grandchildren, Merle and Noel Jones. Others surviving are 13 great grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Anna Grau of Beloxi, Miss. After her husband's death, Mr. Swartwoudt remained on the home place, busying herself with gardening, rug making, piecing of quilts and the culture of house plants and garden flowers. She was a member of the local Methodist church and the WSCS, who in honor of the loss of its oldest member, attended the funeral in a body. Her life was marked by service and her kindly deeds will live on in the memories of both the family and a host of friends. Pallbearers were five grandsons and one grandson-in-law, Lloyd Swartwoudt, Maynard Jones, Floyd Swartwoudt, Roy Jones, Harold Jorve and Paul Houston. Interment was in the family lot in the Cannon City cemetery. Those from away attending the last rites were Mrs. Ethel Jorve and son Harold of Jamestown, North Dakota; Mr. and Mrs. John Hustedt of St. Paul, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Houston of Minneapolis, Roy Jones of Northfield and Maynard Jones of Minneapolis.
