Arrivas Surname History

  The earliest reference to this surname is that of three brothers named Juan Sanchez de Arriba, Pedro Ibanez de Arriba and Sancho Ibanez de Arriba, sons of Juan Aznarez de Arriba, who were living in the city of Colosa (Guipzucoa) in 1346.  Other references to this surname are found in the “Indice de Los Apellidos Probados de La Orden de Carlos III” (a Spanish military order), where the following are listed:

Diego de Arribas;

Jacinta de Arribas

Juana Maria de Arribas

Domingo de Arribas

Jeronima de Arribas

There is also a record of a Spanish family named Arribas.  The ancestral seat of this family was located in the northern region of Arribas.  Branches of this house settled throughout the Iberian Peninsula.  A decendant of this family Don Santiago Arribas, was granted privileges of nobility in 1793.

      The surname Arrivas or Arribas is of Basque toponymic origin, deriving from the place name where the initial bearer lived or held land.  In this instance, the surname Arribas comes directly from “Arribas”, which is the name of a town in the province of Guipuzcoa (Basque Country, northern Spain).  Therefore, the original bearer of the surname Arribas was someone who was identified by the members of his community as “one who hailed from Arribas”.  The place name Arribas derives from the Basque words “(h) arri”, which means “stone, cliff”, and “iba”, which signifies “under”.  This toponym has been interpreted by Basque etymologists as “place under the cliff, or under the crag”.
