vi. Edward Askren, born February 1831 in Harrison County Indiana; died Abt. 1910 in Doniphan County, Kansas; married (1) Unknown; married (2) Hester Routh October 16, 1851 in Harrison County Indiana B 309; born November 02, 1834 in Harrison County Indiana; died September 05, 1861 in Harrison County Indiana.

Notes for Edward Askren:
Ethel Weber, granddaughter of Martha Hester Askren, discussed Edward Askren's family in the following letter [excerpt] dated March 11, 1987.

...Our family knew very little about the Askrens until this past year. Even the older members of the family have little knowledge of their ancestors... The following is from my personal knowledge and that of my father.

Edward Askren and his three children, Martha, Edward and David came to Doniphan County, Kansas (Palermo Community) sometime in the late 1880s. We have a school book of Martha's that she had written "Palermo School "on the inside cover, however, there is no date. We do know Martha was working in the home of a Wathena pharmacist at the time of her marriage to my grandfather. (Wathena is 3 miles from what used to be Palermo). We are assuming Martha was in her teens or very close to it when they arrived in this part of the country. Martha married Grandfather - John Henry Tucker - in 1897. She was nineteen at the time of her marriage. My father - Arthur M Tucker - was Martha and John's first born in 1898. Martha died in childbirth with her sixth child in 1909. Until recently we knew Edward only as "Grandpa Askren." Apparently he was living in the home of Martha and John at the time of Martha's death. He tried to help with the children as best he could until he fell and broke a hip. Grandpa John Tucker re-married in 1911 and Grandpa Askren was not living at that time so we are guessing his death was around 1910. We know where he is buried but can find no grave marker. In that cemetery there are a number of large red stones that were used for marking the graves. These stones of course have no inscriptions. My father was eleven when Martha died and he was the only one who really remembered her well. Grandpa Askren's eyesight was very poor so my father read to him a great deal.

Martha was an excellent seamstress. My father told of her making him a very fine suit from the good parts of a mans worn out one. One of my aunts inherited that same talent.

Edward Askren's son David never married. He was a gambler. He lived by his philosophy that a gambler or drunkard should not marry. He owned a "Blind Pig" in St Joseph, Missouri, between 1910 - 1915. (St Joseph, Missouri is just across the river from our community) David was a blackjack dealer at what he called the Joint. The Joint was a cigar and tobacco shop with card games in the back rooms. He always dressed in a nice three piece suit, crisp white shirt and bow tie. He would come to our house by Greyhound bus about once a month for some of my mother's home cooking. David was still working at the Joint at age 79 when he was struck by a car and suffered a broken hip. My father looked after his needs from that time until my father's death in 1967. At that time I took
over his care. He died at age 90 and is buried next to Martha and John in Bellemont Cemetery, Wathena, Kansas. I never had the good sense to ask David anything regarding his family as I did not become interested in my ancestors until much later. The same is true with my father. I am sure he knew the answers to some of the questions that are nagging at me now.

Now for Edward Askren's other son who was also Edward. This Edward worked for fruit growers in the Wathena area until his late 30s. He then went to Nemaha, Nebraska where he bought a small fruit farm and married a widow whose children were nearly grown. He died in Nemaha and is buried in Auburn Cemetery, Auburn, Nebraska. I have not found who Edward's second wife was. The 1910 census lists Martha's mother being born in Missouri...

(Lanesville Cem).

Sarah "Sally" Davis:Married Noah Rumley after Col. William Gresham was killed in 1834.

The Illustrated Atlas and History of Harrison County, Indiana, shows the following biography for Sarah.

Mrs Sarah Rumley, whose maiden name was Davis, was born in Springfield, Kentucky, September 5th, 1807. She came with her parents to Harrison County when twelve years of age. In 1825 she was married to William Gresham and came as a bride to live in the house near Lanesville where she died, March 6, 1905. In January 1834, Mr Gresham was killed while performing his duty as Sheriff...
In January, 1834, a disturbance arose in the Sipes neighborhood, near Blue River township. Levi Sipes, a young man, became enraged over a whipping given his brother in school and grew so unruly that the local authorities were not able to manage him. They sent for the County Sheriff, William Gresham, that he might arrest him. Sipes shot Mr Gresham and afterwards slashed him with a
knife. The body of Gresham was prepared for burial and brought to Corydon and afterwards taken to his home near Lanesville. Sipes was tried at the April term of Court, 1835, and was defended by Honorable John Rowan, of Louisville, Kentucky. Charles Dewey was prosecuting attorney. The jury returned a verdict of manslaughter and punishment fixed at twenty-one years in penitentiary and one thousand dollar fine. Sipes was pardoned by the Governor after having served four or five years imprisonment and his fine was remitted. Thus after a married life of ten years she [Sarah] was left a widow with five children. She was afterward married to Nathan Rumley. Her eldest son, Colonel Benjamin Gresham, was a soldier of the Mexican and the Civil War.

Notes for William Gresham:
William and Sarah and other members of the Gresham family are discussed in an excerpt from a biography of their son Walter Q
Gresham as follows:

Colonel William Gresham, the father of Walter Q Gresham, was born in Mercer County, Kentucky, September 17, 1802. He was the eldest son of George Gresham, who was born near Petersburg, Virginia, October 9, 1776. Lawrence Gresham, the father of George, was born in England. In 1759, when a small boy, Lawrence was sent to Virginia to live with his uncle -"indentured," it was called.
After securing his "freedom" at his majority, Lawrence served for a time in the ranks of the Continental army. While yet a young man, George Gresham joined the stream of emigrants pouring into Kentucky. He "carried along" with him his father, Lawrence, then in feeble health, and his mother. In 1801 in Mercer County, Kentucky, George Gresham married Mary Pennington, the only sister of
Dennis Pennington. In 1809 George Gresham moved his family, and entered land in Harrison County, Indiana, where the hamlet of Lanesville is now located. He gave ground for the churches and graveyards. In one of these cemeteries there are buried Lawrence, George and William Gresham, representing three generations, and representatives of several subsequent generations. November 3, 1825, William Gresham married Sarah Davis. They went to live in a log cabin on land his father had entered, within a mile of the father's house. On this spot Sarah lived eighty-one years. William Gresham was elected by popular vote a colonel in the State militia, and in 1833, although a Whig, was almost unanimously elected sheriff of Harrison County. January 26, 1834, he was stabbed and instantly killed while aiding a constable to arrest a desperado named Levi Sipes. There survived William Gresham, his widow, Benjamin and two younger sons, Walter Quintin, born March 17, 1832, and William G, born July 30, 1833.

Notes for Josiah Springer:
Note: NOTE: Be aware there is a Springer Hoax. There are published genealogies with intentionally f alsified family trees that were intended to bilk possible Springer descendants. This family i s copied from the IGI and can be extended back to Adam. There are several problems just in th is family group: 1) Fayette County, PA was formed from Westmoreland County, PA in 1783, and i f these birth are accurate they should be listed in Westmoreland, not Fayette County; 2) Th e genealogy lists children Hannah and Ann which are usually interchangeable names but the fir st is not deceased as both are listed with husbands.

The Name: Originally almost all the Springers come from Thuringia. The name started when Louis the II Count of Thuringia leaped or Sprang from a castle tower and earned a pardon from the King and the nickname Louis the Springer. 15. Susanna Slack, born Abt. 1742 in Pennsylvania; died Abt. 1833 in Harrison Co., IN. She was the daughter of 30. Randolph Slack and 31. Sarah Penn.

Notes for Anthony Litching:
The earliest member of the Litsey family of whom we have record was named Anthony Litsey. He was born about 1745. Judge Berry Lewis Litsey, a great-grandson of Anthony Litsey, was quoted as saying: "When our forefathers came to this country from Scotland, the name was Leitching, later was spelled Litching and was then changed to Litsey."

In 1774, Anthony received a grant of 98 acres from King George III of Great Britain. The grant reads as follows: George, the 3rd, by the Grace of God of Great Britain, France, Ireland, King, Defender of the Faith, etc... Know Ye... That for diverse and good causes and considerations, but more especially for and in consideration of ten shillings of good and lawful money for our use paid to our Receiver General of our revenues in this our colony and Dominion of Virginia, we have given, granted and confirmed and by these presents for us, our heirs and successors do give, grant and confirm to Anthony Litching one certain tract or parcel of land containing 98 acres lying and being in the county of Augusta on a small branch of the Bull Calf Pasture Creek, opposite the Scott's land and bounded as follows... Beginning at two hickories on a ridge and thence S20 W 90 poles crossing a branch to a white oak and hickory, thence S 15W 60 poles to a chestnut and a black oak, thence S 70 E 100 poles to a lynn and a Spanish oak, thence N 30 E 156 poles to a mulberry tree and thence N 74 W 108 poles to the beginning... Witness our trusty and well beloved John Earl of Dunmore our Lieutenant and Governor General of our said colony and Dominion at Williamsburg, Virginia, under the seal of our said colony the 5th day of July, 1774, in the 14th year of our reign.

In April 1778, Anthony left for Kentucky. Soon after his departure, Anthony was called to serve in Captain Hicklin's Company of the Augusta County, Virginia, militia. Since he was in Kentucky, he did not appear and in June 1778, a court martial warrant was issued. The records show that Anthony had left for "Kentuckie before April" and that he would not be required to serve. The following year, 1779, Anthony is listed as "gone" on a list of delinquents for Augusta County, Virginia. On June 16, 1780, Anthony and Susanna (Slack) Litching sold the 98 acres that Anthony had received from George III through the following deed[excerpt].
This Indenture made June 16, 1780, between Anthony Litching and Susana his wife of the County of Augusta of the one part and Andrew Jaeger of Shenandoah County of the other part... for and in the consideration of Ð900... one certain tract or parcel of land containing 98 acres lying and being in the county of Augusta on a small branch of the Bull Pasture opposite Scott's land...

Upon their arrival in Kentucky, Anthony and his family first lived in what later became Mercer County, Kentucky. Like his father-in-law, Randolph Slack, he was living in the neighborhood between Harrodsburg and Danville, Kentucky. At the August 1783 session of the Lincoln County, Kentucky Court, it was "Ordered that one Tithe belonging to Anthony Letching be added to the list taken by Alexander Robinson." Three years
later, he moved his family west a few miles into what is today Washington County, Kentucky. There he purchased 201 acres of land lying on Road Run, a branch of Cartwright's Creek. At that time, this land was part of Nelson County, Kentucky. Land records of both Nelson and Washington Counties have been examined for a record of the purchase, but nothing has been found. In 1818, the "lawful heirs and legatees of Anthony Litsey deceased" deeded this tract to Matthew Walton and his wife through the following deed [excerpt]:
This Indenture made this May 29, 1818, between Matthew Walton and Frances, his wife, of the one part and Randal Litsey, John Litsey, Anthony Litsey, James Litsey, Matthew Litsey and Henry Litsey, Lawful heirs and legatees of Anthony Litsey deceased, of the other part all of the commonwealth of Kentucky... for and in the consideration of $166.66, contracted to be paid in the year 1786, or thereabouts... a certain tract of parcel of land situate lying and being in the county of Washington and Commonwealth aforesaid on the waters of Road Run, a branch of Cartwright's Creek, containing by survey 201 acres, two roods, and 15 poles...

On the same day, another deed was recorded regarding the same tract:
This indenture made and entered into this May 29, 1818, between Randel Litsey for himself and as attorney in fact for James Litsey and John Litsey and John Davis as attorney in fact for Anthony and Henry Litsey and Matthew Litsey all of the County of Washington and commonwealth of Kentucky of the one part, and Basil Muligan of the County and State aforesaid of the other part. Witnesseth that the said Litseys and Davis for and in the consideration of $1,266... a certain tract or parcel of land situate lying and being in the county of Washington and state aforesaid, on the waters of Road Run a branch of Cartwright's Creek, containing by survey, 201 acres, 2 roods and 15 poles and beginning as follows...

An article written by Orval W Baylor in 1934 mentions a connection between the Lincoln and Litsey families as well as the dangers of living in Kentucky in the early days.
...Of all persons qualified to speak with authority on early Lincoln family history, insofar as it related to the first years in Kentucky, the members of the Litsey family are entitled to considerate attention. The earliest members of the Litsey family in Kentucky was Anthony Litsey, whose house stood about midway between the Lincoln cabin on the South and the Richard Berry Sr house on the North. It is but a few minutes walk from the Anthony Litsey house-site to the spot where the pioneer Lincoln is said to have met his death.

Randel Litsey, son of Anthony, married Mary Gregory, daughter of Richard Gregory. Randal and Mary Gregory Litsey were contemporaneous with Thomas Lincoln and Nancy Hanks, the Litsey's being but a few years older than Thomas and Nancy. Mary Litsey was one of Nancy's intimate associates. She assisted with the making of Nancy's wedding dress and she attended the wedding of Thomas and Nancy at Francis Berry's house in 1806. Uriah Litsey was a son of Randal and Mary Gregory Litsey. From his mother he learned much that related to the Lincolns and their kinfolk. This information he passed on to his son, Judge Berry Litsey, and the Judge spent the greater part of a day in conducting his son, David Litsey, over the Lincoln country, and in acquainting him with the facts as he had heard them from this father.

Now, what do the Litseys say about the Lincolns?

Judge Berry Litsey took David Litsey to the site on Lincoln's Run, now marked by a replica of the original Lincoln cabin, and there pointed out the place where Abraham Sr settled in 1782. From thence, the Judge and his son walked along the ridge overlooking the Beech Fork, to a point which the Judge designated as being the same that his father had often told him was the place where the President's grandfather, while outhunting, was killed by Indians.
From the massacre site, father and son passed to the burying-ground, situated on a high bluff overlooking the river. At the western edge of the graveyard, Judge Litsey located a grave that he said was none other than that of the pioneer Abraham Lincoln [the President's grandfather].There could be no mistake for the grave was then marked by a stone that bore the inscription A LINCOLN.
David Litsey took mental note of the grave site and afterward he took a photograph of the stone. At that time, David Litsey's picture shows it was still standing and name was plainly showing.

Last Fall, David Litsey took me to the old burying-ground. He went straight to the spot where this father, some thirty years before, had pointed out to him the grave and head-stone of Abraham Lincoln Sr. The stone was no longer intact. Only the base remained in place. Several pieces lay scattered about. On one of the pieces I found a part of the name. The pieces were so badly mutilated that it was impossible for usto reconstruct them and restore the entire inscription.
As mentioned in the article above, during the 1780s and early 1790s there were numerous conflicts with the Indians in the area. Anthony was one of many who fought to get the Indians under control. Kentucky military payroll records dated November 14, 1800 document that Anthony was paid for fighting against the Shawnees August 10, 1787.
Anthony died sometime between June 28, 1792 and September 13, 1792, in Nelson County, Kentucky, in an area that is today the southeast corner of Washington County, Kentucky. His will, recorded in Nelson County, Kentucky, reads as follows:

In the name of God Amen, I Anthony Litsey [spelled Litsen in the will] of Nelson County, and State of Virginia, do find myself weak of body but of perfect mind and memory. And knowing that it is appointed for all men once to die and to rise again at the resurrection by the mighty power of God. That is to say, principally, and first of all I recommend my soul into the hands of God who gave it, and [my body] to the Earth to be buried at decent Christian burial at the discretion of my Executors, and as touching my worldly estate where with it has pleased God to bless me with in the life, I give, devise and dispose of it the following manner: FIRST I give to my well beloved sons my Lands and Tenements in an equal proportion namely, Randolph, John, Anthony, James, Henry and Matthew, only I will they shall not dispose of the same till all come of age and then by the consent of each other. Item next: I give to my oldest daughter Sarah such of my property as she has already got and ten shillings more. Item: I give to my daughters Catherine, Mary and Nancy an equal share of my goods and chattels and also my sons to receive an equal share of my good and chattels with they of my daughters only. I will that such of my children as wants schooling to be schooled and at the expense of my sons. Item: I give to my well beloved wife Susannah such portion of my estate as the law directs during her natural life and not to destroy the same and at her decease to be divided between all the children, and to assist me in this, my last Will and Testament, I appoint my trusty friends: Benjamin Ogden and William Hays my Executors, I have to this end set my hand and seal June 28, 1792.

31. Sarah Penn, born Abt. 1734; died Aft. April 02, 1795 in Washington Co., Ky..

Notes for Randolph Slack:
Randal Slack was born about 1720, probably in Pennsylvania. The exact place of his birth is unknown but at one time the Slacks were living near the old Fort where Harrisburg, Pennsylvania is today.

Augusta County, Virginia, Court Records, Order Book 16, May 18, 1779 - Randall Slack and Sarah, his wife, failing to appear as witnesses to the will of Casper Ekert, are fined unless they appear, &c.
By 1781, Randal had moved his family to Kentucky. The first mention of Randolph in Kentucky was recorded in August, 1783 in the Lincoln County, Kentucky, Court, when it was "Ordered that one Tithe belonging to Randolph Slack be added to the list taken by Alexander Robinson."

Pioneer History of Washington County, Kentucky, by Orval W Baylor, page 22 -- Randolph Slack, prominent in his time in public affairs in Washington County, settled therein about the year 1795. His home was in the neighborhood of Hardin's Mill, which stood on the Little Beech, some miles below Dorsey's Mill. Slack came to Kentucky in the fall of 1781, and resided first in the neighborhood of Danville. In 1782, he was "called out to guard Bullitts licks." While enroute to the licks, he camped "on the ground at or near where Parker improved on the Big Beech at the mouth of Cartwright's creek." This land, in what is today Washington County, Kentucky, was later purchased by him. On this site, Randolph built a plantation where he remained the rest of his life.

Notes for Robert Askerene:
Information on the early Askern family in England was done by the son of Etta Belle Castleberry of Grand Terrace, Ca. He had lived in England and visited in Yourkshire around 1993. He said that he designed Internet Web sites and that in the summer of 1998 he would be traveling to Penslvania to do further research.

He says that the Askren name derives from a place in South Riding, Yorishire County named at times throughout history as Askren and Askern. It means something like "Village of the White Ash Tree". The community and region was part of the "Danelaw" and Danish by origin after the Jutes/Algles and before the Saxons/Normans. In ancient times it was a Roman Sap and today, just like 1700 years ago when the Romans used it there are White Ash trees surrounding the beautiful hot springs pool.
