Fun facts about the Azzo family

This is the story of one branch of the Azzo family: Both of my parents have the surname "Azzo" except that my mother's family spells it "Azo".  My father and mother are distantly related - perhaps 6th cousins. Our family has always married other Azzos, keeping our last name running for a very long time (my great-great-great-great grandparents were both named Azzo, as were their descendants).  I'm not sure why but it seems to me there must be a reason that they are trying to keep their bloodline "pure." I'm trying to find out why.
