Leverett), moved to nearby Butler County, Alabama where she is listed living with her son Walter in the Township of Dock in precinct # 4. Nearby are several members of the Tindal family and also the family of John Dean, brother of Samuel Mack Dean. Listed in the census is Walter Leverett, not married and age 20. Elizabeth Addline Barrington

1900 Federal Census, Crenshaw County, Alabama
Township of Rutledge

Elizabeth Addline Barrington and Morgan Anderson Rodgers and family are listed in the 1900 Federal Census for Crenshaw County, Alabama living in the town of Rutledge. He is listed as a farmer. In the census he is listed as 66 years of age and born June 1834. However, this is in disagreement with the birth date on his tombstone which shows his birth as June 14, 1854. Elizabeth's date of birth is correct and agrees with the daye on her tombstone. Morgan's father is shown to have been born in South Carolina and his mother in Alabama. Elizabeth died June 09, 1925 and Morgan died June 20, 1912 in Crenshaw County, Alabama, possibly near the community of Blackrock. Their graves are located in the Blackrock Cemetery in the northwestern section of Crenshaw County, Alabama about seven miles northeast of Rutledge.

1910 Federal Census, Crenshaw County, Alabama
Township of Rutledge

Elizabeth Addline Barrington and husband Morgan Anderson Rodgers are listed in the 1910 Federal Census for Crenshaw County, Alabama living in the township of Rutledge. Elizabeth is listed as "Birdie E" age 53 and Morgan is listed as 75 years of age. Once again, as with the 1900 census, the age of Morgan is incorrect. In the 1900 censu he is listed as 65 when his age should have been 45, this census shows him as 75, however is age would be 55. The birth date of Morgan is confirmed by the dates on his tombstone. Living with them are three children. William Anderson is listed as "Willie A" age 29; John Morgan is listed as 28 years of age and Katie is 27 years of age. Palistine Rodgers married before 1905 and is not listed.

Mary Ann Frances Barrington

Mary Ann Frances Barrington was a daughter of William Winfield Barrington and Rhoda Adeline Weaver, born January 03, 1859, in the Blackrock Community. At the time of her birth Blackrock was still part of Butler County but later became part of Crenshaw.
Mary Ann married on November 30, 1880 in her parents home. The wedding was officiated by the Rev. J. E. Kolb. She married John Andrew Tindal, a son of William David Tindal and Margaret Ann Smith, also from the Blackrock Community. John Andrew was born January 23, 1859.
John's father, William David Tindal, was born in South Carolina, possibly in the Edgefield County area boy 1830 and it is believed that he may have moved to Eufaula in Barbour County, Alabama when he first came to Alabama then later to the Blackrock Community. Some references have been made that John Andrew may have been born in Barbour County and not Butler but most likely was Butler. This would be the same migration pattern followed by Mary Ann Barrington's father and indicates they may have moved together to the area of Blackrock.
After their marriage it appears they moved to an area near the parents of John Andrew. This area was located in precint 4 near the county line of Crenshaw and Butler, home to many of John's siblings and other Tindal families. They are found living here in the 1910 and 1920 Federal Census for Butler County.
John Andrew Tindal died at home in Butler County on October 05, 1921 and his wife Mary Ann died in the Blackrock Community in Crenshaw County on April 12, 1933. They are buried at the Blackrock Cemetery in Crenshaw County, Alabama.

Living in the home with them is their daughter and her family. She is listed as Joanne age 25 and her husband Samuel Marion Stephenson age 31. They have one child in this census, Mary Alene (Alline) age 2. The Dean family living next to the Tindal family is Franklin Dean, son of Charles Sumpter Dean I, and a brother of Samuel Mack Dean, husband of Anna Iola Barrington, a niece of William Winfield Barrington.

William Ausborn Barrington, the second child of William Augustus Barrington, was born December 12, 1884 in Honoraville, Crenshaw County, Alabama, and died April 08, 1950 in Marlow, Stephens County Oklahoma. He married Lodel Skipper on December 01, 1904 in Crenshaw County, Alabama.
Lodel was a daughter of Needham Skipper and Sarah Dean, born August 28, 1886 in Crenshaw County, Alabama. Lodel was the sister of Frances Skipper who married James Marion Barrington, brother of William Barrington. Lodel died on October 06, 1955 in Marlow, Stephens County Oklahoma.
At the time of the 1920 Federal Census for Crenshaw County, Alabama, William Ausborn Barrington and his family were still living near Honoraville. William, along with his father and brother James' widow and their families moved to Marlow, Oklahoma a few years after the census was taken. There was an infant child of William and his wife who was born and died in 1921 in Oklahoma so obviously the move to Oklahoma came not long after the census. The census, taken in July, 1920 and indictes their move was probably early 1921.
William and Lodel are buried at the Marlow City Cemetery in Marlow, Stephens County, Oklahoma.
Alexander Barrington was the second child born to Marion Madison Barrington and Anne Margaret Heidt. He was born in Eufaula in Barbour County, Alabama on August 28, 1854. Albert married in Crenshaw County on October 08, 1877 to Nancy Ella Allen, who was the mother of his fourteen children. Nancy was born in Crenshaw county. Her death date is unknown but she was still living in 1903 and is buried in Santa Rosa County, Florida.

Alexander and Nancy were living in Crenshaw County at the time of the birth of their son John William Barrington Sr., on May 20, 1896 in the town of Brantley. By the time of the birth of his son Albert Orie Barrington on January 17, 1901 he was living in Gantt which is in the northern section of Covington on the Crenshaw County line and was still there on February 10, 1903 when his daughter Anna was born. Albert obviously had moved into Covington County prior to 1900 as his family is found there in the 1900 Federal Census. He died on December 30, 1915 in Santa Rosa County, Florida. The time he moved to Santa Rosa was probably soon after his daughter Anna was born. Living in Santa Rosa at the time he moved was his brother, Willis J. Barrington. Willis had purchased land there (deed number 16724H) on June 01, 1903.

Alexander and Nancy are buried at the Concord Primative Baptist Cemetery in Jay, Santa Rosa County, Florida. Alexander died form complications of pneumonia.
William Marion Barrington

William Marion Barrington and his wife Amanda are listed on the 1900 Federal Census for Rutledge, Crenshaw County, Alabama. At first I was under the assumption they had only one child, a son by the name of William Henry. After a review of the above mentioned census I find a total of seven children, four daughters and three sons. Also living in the home with them was Sarah A. M. Dean, age 65. Sarah was the second wife of Charles Sumpter Dean I. Sump Dean had a son, Samuel "Mack" MacDonald Dean, who married Anna Iola Barrington, daughter of Marion Madison Barrington who was a son of Willis Barrington, the grandfather of William Marion Barrington.

1900 Federal Census, Crenshaw County, Alabama
Township of Rutledge

William Marion Barrington and family are listed in the 1900 Federal Census for Crenshaw County, Alabama living in the Township of Rutledge. Listed are William age 39, his wife Amanda is listed as age 39. Also listed are children Willie L., age 17; William Henry age 15; Anna age 13; Walter J., age 11; Ethel age 8; Ulbert age 5 and Lillie age 1. Living in the home with them is Sarah Dean, age 65.
By the time of the 1910 Federal Census, William Barrington had added one more child to the family. The handwritting in this census is very poor and from what I can make of this, the name of the last child is "Robbie" Barrington, 8 years of age. Also from this census I find Sarah Dean still living at age 75. By the time of this census I find three children were no longer living at home. They were Willie, Henry and Anna. Henry was listed as single, living alone at the age of 24.

In 1896, according to the Confederate and pension Records at the Alabama Archives, William was a pensioner. He certified on his application that he served as a private in Co. K, 17th Alabama Infantry Regiment, that he enlisted in September 1862 at Greenville, Alabama and that his post office address was Rutledge. Witnesses swore that he did serve. The Board agreed with his appraisal of his property (valued at under $400), however, they felt that the severity of his physical condition would not keep him from performing manual labor. He was discharged in Montgomery, 9 June 1865. His discharge papers include the information that he was 6 foot, 2 inches, dark hair and blue eyes. And he could sign his name. "

William Winfield Barrington and family are listed in the 1870 Federal Census for Crenhaw County, Alabama, living in the Roberson district near the Township of Rutledge. William is listed as 42 years of, a farmer by occupation and born in Georgia. His wife, Rhoda Adeline Weaver, is listed as 41 years of age, also born in Georgia. There are five children listed in the census. They are Elizabeth, age 13; Mary Ann age 10; William Marion age 8; Johanna age 6 and the last is listed as Child (male), 1 year of age. This last child is Madison Walter Barrington, born August 29, 1868. One other child, Rhoda Melvine Barrington, was born after the census. Three other children were also born prior to this census. The second and third were Ezekiel and Amanda who died young. Their first child was Sarah Cebelle "Bernice" Barrington, born in 1850 and married William Jasper Wren in 1866.

"1890 Tax List, Crenshaw County, Alabama, William Winfield Barrington living in beat 6 Fullers Crossroads; section 21, T9N R16E, 169 acres." This places William and his family near Fullers Crossroads in 1890. Fullers Crossroads is located approximately 10 miles to the north of the Crenshaw County Seat of Luverne. At the time of the 1890 Tax List, Rutledge was the county seat. Fullers Crossroads is also a few miles to the east of the Blackrock Community. The next record that places William in Crenshaw County is the following census. Living close to William was his son William Marion Barrington and nearby was John Madison Barrington, a son of Marion Madison Barrington, William's brother.

"Federal Census for Crenshaw County, Alabama, 1900"

"William Winfield Barrington; head of household; white male born May 1829; age 71 years: Married for 50 years and born in South Carolina: Father born in South Carolina, mother born in South Carolina: Wife: Rhoda Barrington; white female born December 1830 age 69 years; born in South Carolina: Father born in South Carolina, mother born in South Carolina:"

Crenshaw County Deed records also give proof to the location of William and his family. One deed recorded inbook 15, page 398 and dated June 08, 1892 record a transaction between William Winfield and his son William Marion. Considering William Marion married in 1892, this transaction was probably granting him land to live on with his new bride Amanda. Another deed listed in book 21, page 106, was filed on January 12, 1901 and another, book 23, page 52 on December 11, 1902. Both of these to his son William Marion.

Black Rock Primative Baptist Church:

I will be 88 years old the 17th day of next August. I was born in Dallas County in 1827 and came to this county in 1837 and settled ten miles east of Greenville and lived there until 1856 and moved to Black Rock. I gave the land to the Primitive Baptist Church at that place and also gave its name from an old black rock near by.

Ed Turner of Honoraville.Ala. Aug.15,1915

William Winfield Barrington and Rhoda Adeline Weaver are buried at the Blackrock Cemetery in Crenshaw County, Alabama.
William Henry Barrington

The Florida Death Index list a death date of William Henry Barrington in July 1860 in Palm Beach, County. I am not sure if this is the same William Henry Barrington. His burial was in the Blackrock Cemetery in Crenshaw County, Alabama so possibly William Henry was residing, working or visiting Palm Beach at the time of his death and then brought back to Crenshaw County for burial. The last record of him in Crenshaw County was in the 1910 Federal Census.

He is listed as Henry age 24, living in the home of Joe A. and Catherine Lambert. He is shown as a laborer for the Lambert family. No wife is listed.
Rev. Walter J. Barrington

"A History of the Baptist of Butler County, Alabama, 1819-1957"

Walter J. Barrington is listed as the pastor of Gravel Hill Church in Butler County, Alabama. Rev Barrington was born in Rutledge in Crenshaw County, Alabama where he married Velma Tidwell. After he became a Minister of the Baptist Church he served with the Gravel Hill Baptist Church in Butler County.

GRAVEL HILL BAPTIST CHURCH

This church was organized in the year 1890. Dr. B. H. CRUMPTON, who was pastor of the First Baptist Church of Greenville at that time, and W. R. MARTIN and W. FELTER were the presbytery in charge. A full list of the charter members cannot be obtained, but the names that follow were in the organizing: Sister Ann RHODES, J. A. RHODES, M. M. WEST, J. B. SMITH, W. M. JAY, J. M. HAWKINS, Kate HAWKINS, and J. F. FREEMAN.
In the early years of the church we do not know the pastors, but for the last forty years the following pastors have served: Rev. Charley PERRY, Rev. J. L. P. COOK, Rev. Bennie OWENS, Rev. Walter J. BARRINGTON, Rev. L. R. TINDAL, Rev. G. D. EVERETT, Rev. C. A. EILAND, and the present pastor is Rev. GUYTON. Two fine young men heard God's call for the ministry and were ordained by this
church, Rev. Has HALFORD and Rev. Ray CROWLEY.

I have found discrepancies in the 1900 and 1910 Federal Census for Crenshaw County, Alabama. The 1900 census list Walter J. Barrington as 20 years of age, putting his birth in 1889, the 1910 census list his birth as September 1888. However, according to the Social Security Index, the birth date of Walter is listed as August 03, 1889, which is probably the correct date. This is also the date on his tombstone.
Walter and Velma were still living in Crenshaw County as of 1911 where he was listed on the Counties Voter Registry. On December 04, 1913 he is found in the Crenshaw County Deed Records where he sold land to Sarah Dean, the widow of Charles Sumpter Dean Sr. He married Velma Tidwell in Rutledge, Crenshaw County, Alabama on April 19, 1913. Velma was born in Alabama April 07, 1894, a daughter of Joah T Tidwell of Rutledge, Crenshaw County, Alabama.
Walter and Velma are both buried at the Hickory Grove Cemetery near the city of Opp in Covington County, Alabama. Next to their graves is a cemetery plot listed simply as "Barr". This plot contains three unmarked graves and two of them are the graves of Samuel MacDonald Dean and his second wife Emma Marler. Samuel first married Annie Barrington, daughter of Marion Madison Barrington, brother of William Winfield. Samuel Dean was a son of Charles Sumpter and Sarah Dean mentioned in the preceeding paragraph.
I am not sure of how many children Walter and Velma had, possibly only one, a daughter who is buried next to them. She is listed as Rubt Jewell Barrington Tucker.
