Robert Bartram was born in 1761 in Norwich, Norfolk County England to William Bartram. He married Anna Maria (Modin) Bartram in 1795 in Italy, and had a child William Bartram. Robert Bartram died at age 83 years old in 1844 in Aylsham.

William was a farmer and merchant in Aylmerton-Alysham-Buxton area of Norfolk. He visited Italy with his mother Lady Bartram and to engage in trade with his Bartram relatives in Civita Vecchia. He was born immediately after his parents returned from a trip to North America in search of the Lost Tribes of Israel (he may have been born in Italy or England). He also as a child attended secretly the Jewish synagogue in Norwich with his mother and siblings. His older brother (later Sir James Bartram) and sister were also with their parents in America. He also visited Jerusalem and Palestine with his mother where he met Thomas Williams whose daughter Jane would later marry his son James in Western Australia. They were both (William and Thomas) friends of the Jewish evangelist Joseph Wolff. He died when he was only 41. He was often confused with his cousin William Bartram a merchant who also lived at one stage in Aylmerton with his first wife Mary Starling (he secondly married Sarah Carter). This other William was a brother to the Bartrams of Civita Vecchia and he later settled in Fremantle in Western Australia where he was in business with his brother-in-laws Thomas and Henry Carter. William is listed in the 1841 census in the civil parish of Erpingham (Aylmerton is part of the Parish of Erpingham) as a farmer and his 80 year old father is living with them (or visiting) and his son James is listed as 15 along with three younger siblings Elizabeth (aged 13), John (aged 11 ) and William (aged 7).
Mary Ann Bartram of Kew Australia was born in 1817 to Howarth Bartram. Mary Bartram died at age 81 years old in 1898 in Kew.

Henry grew up in Beverley on his fathers farms Avon Dale and Emerald Hills. When he was 15 or 16 he accidentally shot his sister Eliza Bartram. For many years Henry went as a shepherd with George Kersley (a great friend of his father James and his grandfather Thomas Williams) to Dumbleyung to graze their sheep. He was secretly engaged to George's daughter Elizabeth Kersley for 15 years before they finally married. James Bartram was opposed to their relationship possibly due to Elizabeth being part Aboriginal on her maternal line. After his marriage he moved with his wife and three eldest children to Wheatfields in Dumbleyung (a Farm on the edge of Lake Dumbleyung). His father-in-law built him the Wheatfields house to live in. Henry became a leading wheat and sheep farmer in Dumbleyung.
In the 1841 Census James is listed as living with his grandfather Robert who was 80 and has an Independent income, his father William who is 40 and a farmer, his younger siblings Elizabeth (13), John (11) and William (7) and James himself is listed as 15. They also have one servant living with them Elizabeth Gath (25). The record is for Erpingham Parish in the South Erpingham Hundred , the Aylsham registration district and the Buxton sub-registration district.
