Cough Surname History

The original Daniel Cough, the earliest of the cough family in the United States, arrived in Mount Desert Island, ME in 1857. He was the very first chinese immigrant to Maine. He had left his home of Amoy, China, in hopes of escaping the poor quality of life dominant there at the time. Discovered as a stowaway on a merchant vessel, he managed to become friends with the captain who gave him a parcel of land in Rockport, ME. He found prosperity in Maine, taking a wife and starting his own business. The cough family has continued in the spirit of entreprenuership. Today the cough family operates hotels, restaurants, bus tours, and a small manufacturing firm. Many of the sixth generation coughs are working for other businesses with some becoming quite successful, in their professional as well as their personal lives.
