Fairlamb Last Name History & Origin
AddHistory
The name comes from the name of an estate in Cumbria, England , called Farlam which was apparently gifted to someone called Walter de Windsor - whose descendants subsequently become known as de Farlam [ literally " de " is french and means means "of" or 'from" Farlam in English ] . Interestedly, it is said that the de Farlam estate was first owned by Walter de Windsor, who it appears was probably of Norman origin, and related to English royalty [and also Saxon, Norman and Scottish nobility] via his mother who was Edith Plantagenet [ b 1152 ]. She was the niece of Henry II of England and it seems the great great granddaughter of William the Conqueror who was also the Duke of Normandy [ he successfully invaded England and become King in 1066 - the most famous date in English history - the Battle of Hastings 1066 .]
Some Fairlambs [ the spelling was not standard and varies before 1750's ] subsequently moved from Cumbria to the Allendale area in Northumberland . [ Allen Dale means the valley of the River Allen ] .This was in or around the 1650's . [ Northumberland is a county adjacent to the modern county of Cumbria] where the Fairlamb name is frequently found in England these days . [ There are at least three towns called Allendale in the USA which presumably were named by emigrants who lived in or knew of this valley . There is also a place called Allentown which may derive from the same place [ Allendale town ] name in England - at least one US Fairlamb reportedly lived there . ]
Some Fairlamb's also emigrated to the USA possibility as early as the first settlers but more likely in or around 1700 . They are most common in the Philadelphia / Pennsylvania areas .
Name Origin
The name Farlam is thought to be of Anglo - Saxon origin . The name is a derivative of the Olde English pre 7th Century term 'Fearn' (fern) and the dative plural form of 'leah' (wood, clearing). So the Farlam estate would have been a clearing in a woodland sealing . There is a [rebuilt] hall these days possibly on the same site called Farlam Hall - a country house near Brampton. Cumbria [ it is now a country hotel ].
