{🞺} A MAINTENANCE CASE.
Ellen Aylen, a young woman, proceeded against her husband, Edward Arthur Aylen, glass and china rivetter, At the local court on Wednesday, before Messrs. Glover and Christmas and Dr. Owen, J's.P., for leaving their child without means of support.
Mr. Daly appeared for the complainant, and defendant did not appear. The evidence of complainant was to the effect that the child was born in the Lying-in Hospital on the 10th December last. Afterwards defendant accompanied her to her mother's door, and left her. He had not given her any money since, but took it to the card table and spent it in drinking and gambling. He earned between £2 and £3 per week, and she asked for 10/- a week.
Defendant had sent her out begging many a time. The boots she had on were got by begging. Defendant had also beat her, smacking her face right and left.
Mr. Daly said that if the child were boarded out by the State its keep would cost 12/6 per week.
An order was made for the payment of 10/- per week, with £1/3/6, costs, defendant to find one surety of £20 that he would fulfil the order.
