In the winter,with all our heavy clothing on we boarded a C-130 aircraft to make a jump in France.Unfortunately at this time I was a mortar gunner in the heavy weapons squad. At about an hour out all hell broke loose. The temperature was up to about 100 degrees.Everyone began to get sick and the plane was one big mess not to mention the floor.We were loaded down with equipment and because we had our parachutes on etc. we couldnt lighten ourselves up. With 1 hour to go and just 1 pass over the dropzone we were informed that the plane would continue to our destiny.If you did not get out,you had to go back on that smelly plane and continue to be sick. Well I knew that I was getting out no matter what.We reached the drop zone and our door bundle with the mortar got stuck in the door.The other side of the plane exited in record time.Now we were stuck.Finally the door bundle came loose and at that time the red light went on meaning you werent allowed to jump.Anyway 3 of us did jump and landed off the drop zone. I landed in a tree but the air felt so good.We finally found the mortar and carried it back to the company area. The C.O. called us in and chewed us out. Evidently there was an officer on the back of our stick and reported us.I told the C.O. that the door bundle got stuck and when it got loose we followed it down.Only 3 of us.Well he took credit for what we did because he instilled the gung ho in us.He also said that we could have gotten killed and he punished us (lightly). The word got around and every company was told what happened and that they should have the same pride in unit. When I got back to Mainz everyone was calling me COMBAT.I didnt have any problem going over the fence on weekends.WE WERE ONLY TERRIBLY SICK!
