Abraham Luther
A photo of Abraham Luther, British Infantryman.My gt gt grandfather enlisted in the 13th Regiment of Foot on the 9th June 1855 at the age of 21 in the city of Liverpool, UK. His service number was 3717. He is described in his pay book as being 5' 4.5" tall, with a fresh complexion, grey eyes and brown hair. This is a scan of a small daguerrotype of him and I would guess the date to be sometime in the 1860s. His first recorded pay in June 1855 was L2.14s.7d. He was paid nothing from October until the following April on account of having to pay for his uniform items. He was stationed in, amongst other places, Malta, The Cape of Good Hope, East India, ?Gorudopore, Dum Dum and Pesharwa. He was discharged from the 51st Regimant of Foot at Pesharwa on 18th October 1865, but it is difficult to read the reason on his discharge parchment. His conduct was described as good. I believe he became a Chelsea Out Pensioner. He died in January 1902 (probably) aged 67/8, and was buried in Kirkdale Cemetery, Liverpool on Saturday, 11 January at 3.30pm at a cost of ten shillings. His wife, Mary Ann Luther, died later that month and was buried beside him on either Tuesday the fourth, or the eleventh of February, again at a cost of ten shillings.
