Margaret Dent was the child of John Evans Dent and Rebecca Hamilton. She was born in Ohio in 1814. She died in 1872 in Roberts Township, Illinois at age 78 and is buried in Roberts Cemetery in Varna, Illinois. Margaret married Livingston Roberts on January 24, 1833. They were the first pioneers of the area around Varna, Illinois. She and her husband were very social and had a large home that was on the road between Chicago and Springfield. They entertained all the time and there is much about Livingston in the Henry Republican Newspaper. Roberts Twp. is named after Livingston and his father Jesse. They were involved in the Black Hawk War. Family oral history states that Abraham Lincoln stayed at their home during his travels in Illinois. Both their original stone cabin and their large house still stand three miles outside of Varna. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1883. They invited over 600 guests including Governor Hamilton of Illinois who was Margaret's second cousin. The ladies in the family prepared 54 cakes, 8 turkeys, 24 chickens, two hams and everything else in proportion.Livingston and Margaret had ten children, six boys and four girls. The home was in the family until 1905. Then one of their workers bought the home and his family owned the home until recently. Their son Jesse Jr. married Josephine Neal and their daughter Hazel Roberts Hymes was my grandmother. She and her husband had resorts on the Lake of the Ozarks and had six children. One child is still living and the thirteen grandchildren are living plus many great grandchildren. None of them was aware of Livingston and Margaret Dent Roberts until lately.
