Marie Campbell & Horce McCandless
Marie Campbell & her husband Horce (we think that is the spelling) McCandless. We know this picture wasn't taken in 1923 as she was married to James Orval Laws then & living in Iowa. We know she was married to & John Lee Johnsonin Iowa in 1939, & in Iowa and still married to him in the early 40's. We think the picture was taken around the early 20's or late teens. Updated Mccandless Biographies
US Congressman. A member of the Republican Party, he served the 37th (1983 to 1993) and 44th Congressional Districts (1993 to 1995) from the State of California in the United States House of Representatives. He enlisted with the United States Marine Corps towards the closing months of World War II and later served during the Korean War. Following his return home, he worked as a dealer in the automobile and truck industry. He entered the political arena, when he served as a member of the Riverside County Board of Supervisors from 1972 until 1982. From 1974 to 1982, he was a member of the Riverside County Housing Authority. During his tenure in Congress, he took a Conservative approach and was known for his efforts to reduce government spending. He was succeeded by Sonny Bono in 1995.

James McCandless married Jane Malcolmson possibly in 1861 in Shankhill, Ant, Ireland (?) and they had 2 children William John and Margaret Jane. They emigrated to Australia in 1863 on the ship "The Hope" and listed their nationality as Scotch although they may have lived in and travelled from Ireland. Jane appears to have died in childbirth along with daughter Margaret Jane shortly after arrival in Australia in 1863 and is buried at Milawa, Victoria. James' and Jane's young son William John Jnr was killed in 1876 when a horse drawn cart up-ended when he was 14 years old.
James was in partnership with his brother William (John) McCandless with farming properties at Howlong and Morebringer, NSW, Australia. They had a falling out in 1878 and dissolved the partnership. He was last reported as living at Brookong Station, NSW in 1901. No record of his death.
