It is Hurrian, probably descending down from the area between the Ukraine and Russia. Queen Nefertiti of Egypt was from the Mittani Empire as was the former queen of Egypt. It is listed in England's Doomsday Book of 1099 as a name of great antiquity.

No one knows the meaning of the name, but the ruling elite of the Hurrians named the empire The Mittani Empire although the name Mittan is Hurrian and not considered Royal or ruling class. The name could have to do with horsemanship and/or chariots as the Mittani were the first to use them in warfare. They helped train Egyptians and The Hittites in this regard.
