Among the first settlers of Petty Harbour was a Mr. Angel, followed closely by such names as French, Parnell, Gribbe, Roote... Angel was the son of a pirate who, with his older brother and father, roamed the Spanish Main until the elder Angel was forced by illness to give up his unlawful trade. He retired to England with his two sons where he was given a pension and large pieces of land by Queen Elizabeth, now known as The Downs. The younger son, still of an adventurous nature, returned to Newfoundland to carry on his old trade, but the name of the pirate was hated here. He came to Petty Harbour where he built a house, married and eked out a miserable living fishing. Old Captain Angel died and left property to his oldest son, but he soon died also and left the land to his brother in Newfoundland. The will was given to a man named Parnell to carry out, was never delivered, but hidden in the back of a grandfather clock. When Parnell died, the will was discovered and passed over to Angel's son in Newfoundland, who having been financed by a merchant in St. John's, went to England to fight his claim. After weeks of fact finding, Mr. Angel's lawyer was poisoned on the eve of his court appearance. Angel, now without funds, returned to Newfoundland where he was afterwards known as "Lord John". The land was taken over by the government, and is now used as an Army training field, and is called Salisbury Plain.
