Pletzer Surname History

There is no recorded Plezer history beyond the oral stories, passed down, from the 19th century.

Pletzers lived in the wooded, mountaineous, border region between Germanic and Latin people. As such their name carries Latin and Germanic roots. It means felling trees to create an opening in the forest.

Pletzer Country of Origin, Nationality, & Ethnicity

The familiy name Pletzer is of Germanic origin as testified by the "er" ending. Concentrations of Pletzers can be found in Austria, in particular in the province of Tyrol and in Tyrol within a small radius of 50km around Kitzbuehel. One branch of the Pletzers comes from Aurach, a small mountain village ([external link]) south of Kitzbuehel. Other concentrations of Pletzers occur in Bavaria, Germany.     The ethnicity of the Pletzers can be traced to the mountaineous region of east Tyrol, Austria.

Pletzer Meaning & Etymology

It is said that the name Pletzer derives from an old dialect word "Plaetz" meaning opening in the forest. The dialect verb "plaetzen" refers to cutting trees. An example of a last name with "plaetzen" is Pletzenauer, that is a clearing by the river side. "Plaetz" may itself be derived from latin "platea", open space, from which the English word place also derives. The German word Platz shares the same root. In German, the letter "c" is pronounced "tz" and this explains the phonetic shift from "t" in latin, to "c" in English and French and "tz" in German. Thus, Pletzers' main activity may have involved clearing the forest to create open spaces.
