Nathan Maxson Purviance was born on July 12, 1838 in Saint Clairsville, Belmont County, Ohio United States, and died at age 61 years old on July 22, 1899 in Perry, Perry County, AR. Emma grew up in Jacksonville, Illinois. Her father William S. McPherson, born in Albermarle County, Virginia, was a school teacher before becoming a surveyor, farmer, and later a hotel owner. Her mother Eliza Kimball was born in Scioto County, Ohio. Emma's family moved to Beardstown, Illinois between 1865 and 1870. She married October 30, 1870 Nathan Maxson Purviance. The couple lived in or near Beardstown when their first child, Arthur William was born. He died there in 1872 at the age of 8 months.
Emma and Nathan then moved to Oswego, Kansas, in August of 1872 where five of their six children were born. Her parents, as well as many other McPherson family members, also moved to Oswego and neighboring communities in south-east Kansas. After 1880, the family moved to the Idaho Territory where Emma filed for divorce.
Emma married December 22, 1885, William Saint Clair Long in Lewston, Idaho Territory. Mr. Long was a mining prospector living in Spokane Falls, Washington and Leavenworth, Kansas. He died during a mining explosion a few years later. Emma then changed her name back to Purviance and traveled between Spokane, Washington and Leavenworth, Kansas. Eventually she moved with her daughter Mata and son-in-law, H. A. Hover to La Crescenta, California by 1911. Emma Bell died April 30, 1919 in Los Angeles, California.

Lincoln Purviance born 1890 Kansas City, Wyandotte County, Kansas to Nathan Maxson Purviance and Jennie B. McMillen. He died about 1893, Perryville, Perry County, Arkansas. His clothes accidently caught on fire near a burning pile of brush. Apparently everyone thought the clothes were fully extinguished, but they continued to smolder and started on fire again. Lincoln was severely burned. He died three days later. Lincoln was only three years old.

Walter began medical practice in 1905. He was living in Leavenworth, Kansas for a while before he and his wife traveled to Syen Chyun, Korea in 1908 as Medical Missionaries. He founded the Duncan Memorial Hospital at Chung Ju, Korea in 1911. Named after a benefactor, Mrs. Duncan from New York.
On July 2, 1911 he writes, "I expect to get the hospital finished this month. How glad I will be. For three years I have thought and planned and drawn plans and made out specifications and orders for material, and paid workmen and kept accounts, and supervised the work under way. I have had to watch every stone and brick that has gone into the building. I have had to direct the carpenter work, the stonework, the painting, the plastering, the plumbing, drawing pictures of all I could not explain. I am proud of the job." The total cost he writes was around $10,000.
