Anna was my grandmother. Her nickname was Tootie. She was one of the kindest people I ever knew. She and my grandfather married on May 16, 1937, in Woonsocket, SD. She told me their friends gave them a 'shivaree,' like the movie "Oklahoma." She didn't enjoy it.
My grandparents rented a run-down farm near Wolsey after their marriage. It cost $10 a month. There was no work, nothing grew, it was the "Dust Bowl" years. She told me she had to wash the dishes before and after a meal, as they were covered in dirt beforehand. My mother couldn't take milk and they had to get goats milk for her. Grandma said they lived on pancakes only for over a year. Things got better, but though my grandparents farmed all of their lives, they always had to rent. They never could afford a place of their own.
The couple had 3 children, my mother, Valois, daughter Sharalyn, and son Dale. Dale died from pneumonia at only 11 months old. They never recovered from that, and decades later, neither could speak of him without tears in their eyes.
My grandmother was never interested in seeing big cities, or living anywhere but in small-town South Dakota. Her favorite things to look for on a road trip were other farms, how they kept their yards, if they had chickens, etc. She loved being a housewife and was very good at it. She also kept chickens. Once a year they'd go through and there would be a bloodbath in the yard as they killed and cleaned the old hens. She said the first time she had to wring a chicken's neck, she cried her eyes out, but then got used to it, as a hard aspect of farm life.
Grandma enjoyed embroidery and used her skills to make beautifully-embroidered, yet useful items for the family. She embroidered a set of dishtowels for my wedding gift, one for each day in the week.
Grandma and Grandpa retired in the mid-1970s and moved into Wessington, SD. They bought a house on the edge of town--the first they had ever owned. After Grandpa passed away in 1995, she always kept his chair in the kitchen as he left it and no one was allowed to sit there. She tried her best as the years wore on to take care of herself, but a fall on the basement steps led to a broken hip and it was then she was moved to the Good Samaritan Home in Miller, SD. I visited her there a couple of times, once on my own. We went out in my van, just to drive around Miller and look at people's yards. It was grand to spend time with her and do something to make her happy...she had done so much to make me happy in my life.
