Tartaglini Last Name History & Origin

Summary

Although being a Tartaglini myself, it's hard to uncover a lot of family history due to dead older relatives who had key information and the constant changing of surnames as people get married/divorced. The family is constantly growing and changing, and if anyone has something new about the family, I would love to hear it. It is known that the Tartaglini family originated in the area that is now Italy and that the surname Tartaglini may translate as "stutterer" or "hard iron."  Many "fun facts" about the Targalini family as well as some famous family members and more on the history of the Tartaglini family may be found by reading on.

History

The Tartaglini family originates with the Ancient Etruscans, and later the Ancient Romans, who lived in and established modern Italy. Also, there is a possibility of part of the family being related to the famoues poet, Ovid.
The Tartaglinis have moved around a lot, thus the name has changed and has many spelling variations (see the section on spelling variations below). A large portion of the family lives in two different countries: Italy and the USA. In Italy, the family is mostly if not completely in the Southern half, particularly in the areas Sulmona and Naples. In the US, the family is mostly in the Northeast, such as Boston and New York, but smaller portions of the family live in Kansas and Colorado (as far as I know).
I have found many Ellis Island records on the first Tartaglinis to pioneer across the North Atlantic from Naples and Sulmona to the shores of New York. Here are a few names, ages, and years of arrival: Adelina Tartaglini, age 21, arrived in 1905 from Seilmona; Alfredo Tartaglini, age 18, arrived in 1914 from Sulmona; Andrea Tartaglini, age 7, arrived in 1913 from Sulmona; Constantino, age 18, arrived in 1905 from Sulmona; Emilia Tartaglini, age 31, arrived in 1908 from Aguila. (More information on these people and others with similar names and spelling variations of Tartaglini is available here:

.)
A few Tartaglinis also participated in World War 2. I believe that it was my great grandfather (father of Antionetta Tartaglini) who used to blow up bridges in Nazi Germany. He was caught twice by the Nazis: the first time he was let go becuase they didn't know who he was and if he did the bombing or not, but the second time they sent him off to a concentration camp. By the end of the war, he was only 80 pounds when the surviving prisoners at the concentration camps were released, and he lived to tell the tale.

Bettina Libratore had been a bit eccentric and a social light. She would change her hair color often and she love her animals, Miniature French poodles. As one of three grandsons she had always been warm, friendly, and kind to us, but very unique in her own accord. She would go out of her way to concoct something out of the refrigerator when we were small. Most of the time it was all the leftovers that had been in there G_d only knows how long. To this day I wondered at how my father and auntie survived. She had called this creation, "Sailer's soup" as she keep pouring more things into this boiling pot. One day I remember going into her garden and collecting the snails from her yard and she would cook them and tried sharing them with us. Not to be rude to my grandmother, I being the oldest child in my family, also had been the guinea pig and the only one brave enough to try it! As soon as I put this delicacy into my mouth I spat it out across her kitchen floor. At that point my brother and sister didn't want anything to do with anything she had cooked, ever! Grandma didn't want us to call her Grandma because it made her feel old, but instead Honey Bunch had been what she choose and that's how we all remember her. She was quite the unique traditional Italian character and very generous. She loved to play her piano, painting, and a bit of a socialite. She had always dreamt of hitting it big in the many endeavors she had tackled in owning a business for herself. Whether it was Amway, or Avon, or hair stylist... she was always concocting a way to make money. She was a typical Italian lady and traditional when it came to holidays. I love this lady we called Honey Bunch for her uniqueness in the way she looked at life... spunky, opinionated, and did most of the talking as grandpa just went along for the ride. As if he was waiting to see what she do next.

The Tartaglini family name in Italy is most prominent in the area of Ancona on the Adriatic coast. At one time there was a Villa Tartaglini (now demolished) and DNA reaches into the Tuscan area. Also, there is a record of a Tartaglini who was a clerk to the Medici of Florence. I would love to know more about this and it is sad that the villa with our name no longer exists.
