My grandfather was a truly wonderful man that everyone who knew him loved. He was very talented, could play any musical instrument by ear-piano, guitar, accordion... But my favorite was simply the spoons at every family gathering where Irish music was played. He was also an excellent dancer and artist/painter and painted me pictures as a child. He was a known practical joker and one time dressed up as the "avon lady": wig, dress, make up and all to surprise visit my Aunt Nancy who lived in another state. He was also an athlete and played basket ball(semi pro)& golfing. He told me how he saw Babe Ruth play baseball. He was a true gentlemen, always dressed neat as a pin with a hat to match(the old fashioned kind with a feather in it), he carried a picture of himself when he was young that showed a thick head of curly locks to prove he once had hair, haha...He only had a second grade education to my knowledge but had beautiful handwriting, read the paper daily and spoke like that of an educated person. His career was that of a Meat Grader in the stockyards of Chicago. But my grandmother always said he was , "Jack of all trades, Master of none". Growing up and living through The Great Depression my grandfather would see what people through out and fix it. He would fix old vacuum cleaners, lamps, radios etc... he was really a genius! and then he would give these fixed items to people who needed them.
He helped EVERYONE out, found jobs, pick up from bad dates, rides to places, attended sporting events, he would be the first person you'd call in an emergency... he was one of a kind and there will never be another like him.
Grandpa was a Roman Catholic but had a phobia of enclosed spaces and would only sit in the last pew. He kept prayer cards to "Our Lady of The Snows" and seemed devoted to Saint Jude-patron Saint of hopeless cases. He died surrounded by his grandchildren and family having driven himself to the hospital for a pain in his shoulder. I remember the last thing he said to me was , "Take care of your teeth" and now that I'm in my 50s I know what he meant! haha...
