My branch of the "Waterholter" family stems from the German town of "Wissentrup." west of Magdeburg. Since my DNA contains no German alleles, and "Wissentrup" is an old military term which means "wise (or educated) troop," I think the family dates to Swedish soldiers from the 30-Years' War. These were the troops who did the administrative work essential to the proper operation of an army, and there was a large Swedish contingent of garrison (administrative) troops stationed in nearby Magdeburg from 1631-1635 and stranded in what is now Germany after the war.

The old Waterholter family farm in Wissentrup is located beside a "lake" (or reservoir) on a road called "Am Waterholt" (to the reservoir).

Name Origin

Waterholt (German: Wasserhalt) means "reservoir." Hence a "Waterholter" is someone who controls or operates a reservoir. The spelling of this name is probably Scandinavian (Swedish?) another possibility is that it is Danish (Jute).
