Carl Tendler spent 14 years as an aerospace engineer. Later, in 1969, he opened Le Vieux Monde, an antiques store at 94 Charles Street. He said, “I love antiques and I love working with my hands.” His engineering background helped him with furniture restoration. He said, “So when the bottom dropped out of the aerospace Industry, I decided to open an antiques store. I'm doing about as well as I would had I stuck with a management‐type job, but I don't have all the headaches and red tape to put up with I make all the decisions — I'm in total control.”

Carl used to have a coon cat named Herschel. Carl was a member of The Chinese Language/Culture Group that consisted of over 100 members and existed in New York City from 1993 through around 2001. Carl loved the ladies. The group once held a party in his penthouse in Greenwich Village. Carl owned a yacht. And he loved to travel. He traveled to such places as Vietnam where he rode a motorbike. Carl was a charming and gentle man. He is greatly missed.
