This may not be the appropriate place to post this info, but I couldn't find a more suitable window. Nettie Shannon was my great-grandmother, although through her first marriage to George Lester and not through her union with John Shannon. When Henrietta Selover was born in 1874 in New York, her father, Abraham, was 21, and her mother, Alice, was 20. She married George Woodruff Lester on November 5, 1891, in Kings, New York. They had two children during their marriage, Ida (1892-1977) and George W. Lester Jr. (1894-1986). In April 1901 in Dayton, Ohio, George Lester Sr. filed suit for divorce from Henrietta (aka Nettie) on the grounds of adultery, desertion, and willful absence for three years. A notice in the Dayton newspaper in July of that year indicated the case was dismissed. Their daughter Ida later in life claimed that both her parents died when she was very young and she was raised by two elderly German women she believed to be her aunts. She never gave any indication of knowing that she had a younger brother, George Woodruff Lester Jr. In the 1900 census in Brooklyn, a Nettie Shannon was "married" to John Shannon in 1897 (about the time of her "desertion") and has a daughter Ida and a son George with the correct birth months but one year off (not unusual for census). There is another daughter listed, Lizzie, born in 1899, apparently the child of John and Nettie. NY death records have Nettie dying in 1903 at the age of 30. That record has Nettie Shannon's parents listed as Abrham and Alice Selover, which is correct for Henrietta. So apparently she moved in with this John Shannon and took her kids by George Lester with her. Perhaps, because they weren't his children, he sent them off to live with others (separately) after her death. No indication if he tried to reach George Lester in Ohio, who by that time had started another family with Martha Hendricks. Nettie was listed as Elizabeth on the death certificate of her son, George Jr. This may well be wrong. But other family trees also give her this name, although clearly some of them have the dates and other facts wrong.
