    Stafford served in the Australian Imperial Force during the First World War; enlisted 18th August 1915, returned to Australia 20th May 1919. He was a member of the 1st Division Train, tasked with delivering supplies and ammunition to the 1st Division. (Australian War Memorial nominal roll: 12636 Private Stanley Vernon Northcott) Faced with the option to volunteer to serve his country once more during the Second World War, Stafford enlisted in the Volunteer Defence Corps on 21st March 1942 and served until 1st October 1945. He was promoted Sergeant in the 3rd Battalion. (Australian War Memorial nominal roll: V363727 Sergeant Stafford Vernon Northcott)
