Stanley was born in Hobart in 1898, a grandson to an ex deported British convict. Stanley's father Arthur David Westwood and mother Jane left Tasmania in approximately 1902 and with 5 of their 7 children, moved to Adelaide in South Australia. The family settled at Unley and Stanley attended Unley Primary School and Unley High School. Early in January1916, at the age of 18, Staley enlisted in the AIF and commenced training to enter WW I. On the 6th of June 1916 Stanley embarked on the HMAT Afric (A19) with the 43rd Infantry Battalion, bound for England. He soon found himself serving in France and during a short stay convalescing in England met a local lass by the name of Violet Armstrong.
The end of the war found Stanley in France and he was eventually returned to Adelaide, South Australia on HMAT Armagh. Soon after Violet Armstrong arrived in Adelaide on a war fiancée assisted passage and married Stanley in Adelaide in late 1919.
Stanley and Violet left Adelaide in 1920 bound for England and spent the rest of their life there. Nothing was heard from Stanley for many years until his death was reported in an English Newspaper stating he had passed away at the Victoria Hospital at Swindon on 15 Feb 1942 aged 44.
