Şahika Tekeli was born in 1914 to Memiş Tekeli and Ayşe Tekeli, and had siblings Hadi Tekeli, Halil Tekeli, Hanife Tekeli, Fahika Tekeli, Emine (Tekeli) İlter, Halil Tekeli, Hadi Tekeli, and Şahika Tekeli. Şahika Tekeli died at age 65 years old in 1979.

In 1914, in the year that Şahika Tekeli was born, President Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation designating Mother's Day, the second Sunday in May, as a national holiday to honor mothers. Anna Jarvis had championed a Mother's Day for years but Congress had joked a few years earlier that then they would have to proclaim a "Mother-in-law's Day" as well. The President who championed a woman's right to vote also created a day in their honor.

In 1926, at the age of merely 12 years old, Şahika was alive when on November 15th, NBC was founded. It was the U.S.'s first major broadcast network. Ownership of the network was split between RCA (a majority partner at 50%), its founding corporate parent General Electric (which owned 30%), and Westinghouse (which owned the remaining 20%).
