Panfilo's parents were born in the region of Sulmona, Italy and emigrated to US. His mother Annunziata (Nancy) died in an auto accident. His father Costantino was a carpenter. Panfilo had two sisters, Rita and Teresa who live in Massachusetts. His brothers were Louis and Philip who both had moved to California with their families and Panfilo followed them. He worked for the Navy in the port of Long Beach and bought a house in Orange County, where he lived until retirement in Victorville.

He attended classes as an adult at Long Beach State but did not graduate. His field was radar and sonar as used in submarines.

Rank attained: TSGT and was a decorated veteran. Wars/Conflicts: World War II He originally enlisted in the Army and spent four years in Panama.
