I knew Joann when she lived in Atlanta in the late 1970's. She was a sweet girl. I saw her again on New Year's eve of 1987. I always knew that she would not stay in this world for long, that she was never going to be a senor citizen. What I never knew was the weight of that which she carried or the severity of her inner struggles. She had a kind heart, a sweet disposition but a harsh addiction to escape. Reality for the most part, wasn't an affair for which she much cared. Life, as far as I knew, was never overly kind to her. She struggled more than most yet had a demeaner that kept it hidden. A voice awakened me this evening that said quite clearly Joann is gone. I googled her name and here she is. I don't understand why it came to me like this or at this time. I am profoundly saddened to find this obituary. I am simply at a loss. I can see her face, hear her voice, remember her smiles, and her tears. We were so young and naïve. It was raining the last time I saw her. I am reminded of the song penned by Michael Nesmith titled simply, "Joanne". It describes the young lady I once knew to a tee. She had a sister in Bridgeport but her name escapes me.

She taught me how to make Italian Meatballs and "I Owe Louie". She made me laugh and cry. I loved her.
