    Abiel Sprague was born on November 10th, 1710 in Rochester, Massachusetts, to Samuel Sprague (1672 - 1740) and Ruth Alden (1674 - 1758). Both of his parents were born in Plymouth, Massachusetts. He had nine siblings: Noah, Micah, Elizabeth, Nathaniel, Samuel, Mary, Priscilla, Micah, and Ruth Sprague. Abiel Sprague married Elizabeth Ashely (1710 - 1742) in Rochester, Massachusetts on June 18, 1730 and they had children: Ruth, Zerviah, and Abiel Jr. Elizabeth died in childbirth and Abiel married Hannah Smith on June 2nd, 1744. They had children James and Elizabeth. Abiel Sprague Sr. died on October 24th, 1773 in Machias, Washington County, Maine at the age of 62. There are records for Abiel Senior and Abiel Junior that seem to be confused. The particular above facts are documented.

    Abiel was Caucasian, of English heritage on his maternal line. His maternal great-grandfather, John Alden, was born in 1599 in Southampton, England. John had been accused of witchcraft when he immigrated to North America, but escaped. Abiel was a Mayflower descendant.

    Abiel lived in several places throughout his life. Initially, he resided in Rochester, Massachusetts, but moved to North Yarmouth (now part of Maine) between 1731 and 1739. By 1759, he was living on Sebascodegan Island (part of North Yarmouth until Harpswell became a separate town in 1750). In 1763, he relocated to Machias, Maine, where he was among the early settlers. Abiel was involved in various land transactions and petitions in Maine and he contributed to the early development of several communities​.

    Abiel worked as a yeoman, in the lumber trade, as a surveyor, and as a cordwainer. A cordwainer was a skilled craftsman who made new shoes and other footwear from high-quality leather.
