Aretha Louise Franklin was born on March 25, 1942 in Memphis, Tennessee. She was born to Clarence LaVaughtn Franklin and Barbara (Siggers) Franklin, with siblings Carolyn and Erma. She married Ted White in 1961 and they later divorced in 1969. Aretha would also marry Glynn Turman in 1978 and they later divorced in 1984. She died on August 16, 2018 in Detroit, Michigan at 76 years old.

Known to many as simply "Aretha", she was also called the "Queen of Soul." A singer-songwriter, she got a star on the Walk of Fame in Hollywood in 1979, was the first woman inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987, won a Grammy Legend Award in 1991, won the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1994, was a Kennedy Center Honoree in 1994, received an honorary degree from Harvard in 2014, and won or received many, many other awards and honors. She also received 18 Grammy Awards and sold over 75 records worldwide.

In 1942, in the year that Aretha Louise Franklin was born, on February 19th, President Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066. This authorized the Secretary of War to "prescribe certain areas as military zones." On March 21st, he signed Public Law 503 which was approved after an hour discussion in the Senate and 30 minutes in the House. The Law provided for enforcement of his Executive Order. This cleared the way for approximately 120,000 men, women, and children of Japanese ancestry to be evicted from the West Coast and to be held in concentration camps and other confinement sites across the country. In Hawaii, a few thousand were detained. German and Italian Americans in the U.S. were also confined.

In 1952, at the age of just 10 years old, Aretha was alive when on February 6th, George VI of England died from a coronary thrombosis and complications due to lung cancer. His eldest daughter, age 25, immediately ascended the throne as Elizabeth II and her coronation was on June 2 1953.

In 1976, when she was 34 years old, The United States celebrated the Bicentennial of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence. It was a year long celebration, with the biggest events taking place on July 4th.

In 1980, when she was 38 years old, on April 24th, a rescue attempt was begun in the Iranian Hostage Crisis. The attempt failed and 8 US servicemen were killed. Eight helicopters had been sent for the mission, but only 5 arrived in operating condition., Since the military had advised that the mission be aborted if there were fewer than 6 helicopters, President Carter stopped it. Upon leaving, a helicopter collided with a transport plane and the men were killed.

In 1995, at the age of 53 years old, Aretha was alive when on October 16th, the Million Man March took place on the National Mall in Washington DC. The March was organized to address "the ills of black communities and call for unity and revitalization of African American communities". An estimated 850,000 people attended.
