Bet you didn't know that it's National Egg Day? Meet Benton Carl feeding his chickens wearing a suit, hat, tie, and dress shoes in 1925 on his farm in Lima Ohio. He must have been quite a character!

Benton Carl (1847 - 1931) was a veteran of the Civil War and was a farmer who followed in his father's footsteps. Benton married twice - his first wife was 20 years older then he, his second wife 12 years younger - and he had two sons from his second marriage.

In his lifetime he experienced the Civil War, the US Census began, daylight savings time and the gold standard went into effect, and so much more that we today take for granted today. While we obviously can't hear from Benton about his experiences, it's thanks to his descendants well-documenting his life that we can get glimpses into the past, and what life was like a hundred years ago.

We'll always remember Benton Carl.

Benton & Annie Carl Have Company

I do not know any of these people except Benton Carl and his wife, Annie Eliza Bodwell, on the right in the rear, and perhaps the man in front with the dark pants and dark tie who resembles George, their son. Those named in the list below are listed left to right, front row first.

Can anyone identify the people in the picture aside from Benton and Annie?

Benton Carl Before or After His First Marriage
Benton Carl Before or After His First Marriage
I believe this to be Benton Carl either before or sometime after his first marriage to Catherine Landaker, because except for the beard, it resembles him so much in their wedding photograph. I believe he either shaved his beard off before the wedding or grew it afterwards, to look older. Rhonda Rice who sent it to me confirmed that someone had taken a black pen and ink and made the beard longer and touched up a scratch in the photograph. She tends to think it is not Benton, and has renamed it CarlMysteryMan.

Benton Carl And His 1st Wife On Their Wedding Day
Benton, at age 21, married Catherine aka Carolyn A. Landaker, a widow, age 40, who was previously married 1) perhaps Benton Hale and 2) Isaac Mohler, by whom she had four children: Mary E. Hale Mohler, 17, who the same month had just married Benton's older brother, Nathan; John Casper Mohler, 13; Isaac Arthello Mohler, 12; and Dora Georgetta Mohler, 4. Benton, in spite of having lost his left hand serving in the Civil War, became a successful farmer, and his first marriage lasted over 25 years until Catherine's death 29 Sep 1894.
