World War I & II: My grandfather Ed Alva fought in World War I and II. He would sit there and tell us stories of the war and what he seen, learned and friends he made. Grandpa was fluent in different languages from his travels in the war. One in particular was German. According to my mother, there was a gentleman in Woodlake my grandpa would visit with and they would speak in German for hours as they visit. He loved to read the comic strips in the paper. He would make us paper hats to put on when we would come to visit. Grandpa would also draw funny characters on a piece of paper. He had this dog named Lucky. Oh he loved that dog. Lucky would sit right by him where ever grandpa would sit. I believe Lucky we with him even before I was born and I am now 56.
