Ethel (Tuck) Cleave was born in 1895 to Thomas Tuck and Elizabeth (Haddow) Tuck, and had siblings Marion Elizabeth Hopcraft ( Tuck, John William Tuck, Thomas Tuck Jnr, Catherine Maud Derby ( Tuck, Elizabeth Pigdon ( Tuck, Harriet Colban ( Tuck, Marjorie (Tuck) Sanford, and James Tuck. Ethel Tuck married William Walter Cleave on September 7, 1921 at St. McCartan's Catholic Church, in Mornington, Victoria Australia, and they were married until Ethel's death on December 17, 1979.

In 1895, in the year that Ethel (Tuck) Cleave was born, on March 15th, in County Tipperary, Ireland, Michael Cleary killed his wife of 8 years, Bridget, and burned her body. His defense was that his "wife" was a changeling that was left in his real wife's place when she was abducted by fairies. He was nonetheless convicted and imprisoned for manslaughter. He spent 15 years in prison.
