1868 - In the year that Frederick Thomas Monk was born, on August 13th, an estimated 8.5 to 9 earthquake struck southern Peru. It had a category "extreme" effect and caused over 25,000 deaths. The resulting tsunami affected areas as far away as Hawaii and New Zealand.

1879 - When he was just 11 years old, on April 26th, the National Park - later renamed the Royal National Park - the 2nd oldest national park in the world, was formally proclaimed in New South Wales, Australia. It was the first park to have the word "national" in its name.

1886 - At the age of 18 years old, Frederick was alive when on October 28th, President Grover Cleveland officially dedicated the Statue of Liberty. A gift from France, the base for the statue had been built using donations from the American public. The unplanned but enthusiastic celebration after the dedication led to the first ticker tape parade.

1919 - By the time he was 51 years old, in June, the Treaty of Versailles - officially ending World War I - was signed. The European Allies demanded "compensation by Germany for all damage done to the civilian population of the Allies and their property by the aggression of Germany by land, by sea and from the air.” The requirement of compensation is seen by most as the reason for the collapse of the German economy and gave rise to the rule of Hitler.

1946 - In the year of Frederick Thomas Monk's passing, on July 4th, the Philippines gained independence from the United States. In 1964, Independence Day in the Philippines was moved from July 4th to June 12th at the insistence of nationalists and historians.
