George W Sr was born circa June 8, 1855 in Berkeley County, West Virginia United States to Harrison J Bradshaw and Sarah (Lohr ) Bradshaw, and had a brother Jeremiah Summers Bradshaw. He married Lucy Ellen Caldwell on December 24, 1877 in Berkeley County, WV, and they were married until George's death on December 19, 1880 in Martinsburg. George Sr had children Bessie Alfreda (Bradshaw) Haines and George W Bradshaw.

In 1855, in the year that George W (Bradshaw) Sr was born, on November 17th, David Livingstone, a Scottish missionary and explorer, became the first known European to see Victoria Falls. He named the falls in honor of Queen Victoria but locally it was - and is - Mosi-oa-Tunya, which means "The Smoke That Thunders".

In 1860, by the time he was merely 5 years old, on February 26th, near Eureka California, white settlers attacked a tribe of Wiyot Indians on Indian Island. Over 60 women, children and older people died. Bret Harte - a writer and friend of Mark Twain - reported the news about the massacre to the papers in San Francisco.
