Georgia Lee (Bates) Ogle was born on February 22, 1931 in Horine, Jefferson County, Missouri United States to Arthur Joseph Bates and Mildred Elizabeth Bates (Née Kister), and had siblings Mary Frances (Bates) Benton, Robert Joseph Bates, William David Bates, Mildred Elizabeth Benton (Née Bates), Virginia Louise Bates, James Richard Bates, Donald Frederick Bates, and Ruth Ellen Bates. She married John Francis Ogle, and had a child John Arthur Ogle. Georgia Ogle died at age 75 years old on September 21, 2006.

In 1931, in the year that Georgia Lee Ogle (Née Bates) was born, in March, “The Star Spangled Banner” officially became the national anthem by congressional resolution. Other songs had previously been used - among them, "My Country, 'Tis of Thee", "God Bless America", and "America the Beautiful". There was fierce debate about making "The Star Spangled Banner" the national anthem - Southerners and veterans organizations supported it, pacifists and educators opposed it.

In 1948, by the time she was 17 years old, on January 30th, Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated in New Delhi by a member of a Hindu nationalist party who thought that Gandhi was too accommodating to Muslims. The man, Nathuram Godse, shot Gandhi 3 times. He died immediately. The shooter was tried, convicted, and hung in November 1949.
