1905 - In the year that Harvie Lowery was born, the Niagara Falls conference was held in Fort Erie, Ontario. Led by W.E.B. Du Bois and William Monroe Trotter, a group of African-American men met in opposition to racial segregation and disenfranchisement. Booker T. Washington had been calling for policies of accommodation and conciliation and these two men, along with the others who attended the conference, felt that this was accomplishing nothing. Five of her watertight compartments failed but she was designed to survive only 4 being flooded. She began to sink. The North American flight became one of her many "firsts" as a female pilot.

1977 - In the year of Harvie Lowery's passing, on May 25th, Star Wars premiered in theaters. Eventually, it became the highest-grossing film of all time - until E.T. surpassed it a few years later. It was an immediate hit with theatergoers.
