    James Patrick Fenelius was born to Johan Edward Fenelius (1884 - 1927) and Anna "Annie" M. Coyle (1884 - 1967). He had siblings Mary, John Edward, Margaret A. Joseph, and Charles Fenelius. James Fenelius served as a Staff Sergeant in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II. He is buried in Long Island National Cemetery to honor his service. James served from February 24, 1942 to October 13, 1945. James married Vera Fenelius and they had a daughter, Ellen.

While initially enlisted as a Private in the Branch Immaterial - Warrant Officers of the US Army, he was later promoted to the rank of Staff Sergeant. James Fenelius's terms of enlistment were for the duration of the war or any other emergency, plus an additional six months, as determined by the President or according to the law in effect at that time.

    When he entered the military, James' civilian occupation was classified as "Tailors And Tailoresses". In 1940, when he was 22, he reported that he was a delivery boy. A decade later, he was working as a cab driver.
